A renovated house in Eastern Switzerland - note the shingles! Historically wealthy house owners had wooden houses and the less fortunate had stone houses. This fueled deforestation. Deforestation led to increased snow avalanches and mud slides. There then was the concept of Riegelhäuser. Basically a woodframe and betwen the carrying beams, plaster and masonry inclusive of straw was used and also to keep the house warm. This is what tourists associate the Alpine region with. Another alternative and perhaps to display fake wealth was to have a stone house and the exterior was than done up with shingles. there was simply not enough wood in this country. Through a series of laws and acts, Switzerland counteracted deforestation and the wooded regions are growing again. Plantation wood is exported particularly for the building industry - nowadays the MinEnergy standards have led to a boom in timber houses.
