A story of woe involving Qantas and Webjet - be warned! I - TopicsExpress

A story of woe involving Qantas and Webjet - be warned! I cancelled a trip and flight. It was cancelled about 9 months before the flight, before flights had been finalised and before seating. At the time the seats were still available for purchase, thus I had not prevented anyone from purchasing them. I am told that there is $77 change fee per person. Fine, $154 down the drain which I believed was a cancellation fee. Fair enough to cover admin etc. They then told me that the remaining money could only be used as credit on Qantas and *only* within 12 months of the *original* booking. Therefore I only had about 3 months after my original trip to use this credit. I asked if it was possible to make it 12 months after the date of original trip. No, so I resigned myself to losing over $650 that I had paid to receive seats which didnt exist yet. Amazingly I get a reason to use the credit. So I contact them to use it and I am then told that there is an $105.90 - Additional Airfare & Tax fee per person as well as government charges. Which is on top of a change fee, and the cost of the new airfare. So basically being charged over $100 to use credit that I paid for. They then tell me that I can actually only use HALF the credit as I am only one of the two passengers, despite me having paid for it all. In their emails they have a line saying if the passengers name changes, you can have the card holder authorise the change. I ask to allow myself to authorise the full amount which I paid for to be allocated towards my ticket. They then said if I wanted to do this Id need to buy a different more expensive kind of fare. Which makes no sense because the credit is going towards a completely new booking. What kind of fare it is should not be relevant. If I call them up to discuss this, they have a $50 phone fee. After all this I also just read they charge GST on top of the fees. So yep, dont book a flight unless you are sure its going to happen or if youre happy to kiss that money good bye! Its looking like if I am lucky I might be able to use $100 towards my actual new fair whilst the other $550 gets eaten up entirely by fees, inflexibility and shitty procedures.
