A study has produced some interesting findings about lying and the level to which people admit to doing so. Researchers at the University of Amsterdam and Ben-Gurion University recruited 527 people and asked them how often they had lied in the previous 24 hours. Just five per cent of the participants were accountable for 40 per cent of all of the lies told, while 41 per cent insisted they had not told untruths at all. The participants were also tested about their honesty by taking part in an experiment in which they rolled a dice and could collect varying sums of money depending on the score, but were free to cheat and win more cash. It was found that those who said they lied more often also collected more money in the test by reporting implausible scores. Writing in the journal Human Communication Research, lead author Bruno Verschuere said the liars group was honest about their dishonesty. It may be that frequent liars show more psychopathic traits and therefore have no trouble admitting to lying frequently, he added.
