A tidbit from my African Journey... These past few weeks I have had amazing opportunities to witness other cultures and ways of living in the world. During my trip to Zimbabwe and Zambia there were many things which stood out for me in regards to new things I have learned which I was unaware of regarding different cultures and societies. Yet one, was seeing a culture that touch, intimacy, signs of affection even between partners is almost rarely if not ever shown. A lot of children when going to school are separated between the genders. Boys and girls go to there own school. They are not shown, taught of giving skills to interact, yet possibly quite the opposite. I watched grown men and woman sit at opposite sides of a table and never intermingle. There is a wonderful quality which shows such a bond amongst the men and a bond amongst the woman yet a disconnect of deep, emotionally available, intimate nature between the two. Yet, the generosity, open hospitality of a culture of such was extraordinary. The kindness with all the local people, the way we would be able to have conversations with those we passed by in the shops and street, I have rarely found in the states. It was such a joy to offer new conversations with friends in other parts of the world on emotional intimacy and to tenderly love the old conditions away. I envision a world where holding hands when walking down the street is a common thing. Where boys and girls learn skills to interact mindfully , presently and access deep places of emotional availability at a young age.
