A typical criticism of my work is that I am justifying my imperfect body by suggesting that my worth as a human doesnt lie there. Heres the thing: I dont agree that justification of my appearance is necessary under any circumstances. In interviews and podcasts the topic of how to deal with maintenance and/or weight gains often comes up and Ive caught myself talking about the differences in my body based on strength training taking a back seat to long walks while Im writing a book--- and then smacking myself in the head-- I dont have to explain this. I wrote a book. Thats the thing that happened. Thats a huge freaking deal to me. I dont believe we have any cause to justify our appearances to anyone. I am not here to be looked at. Im not a puppet, a doll, artwork or an accessory. My body is my home. It carries every wound, every story, every triumph. It has carried me through hell and danced with me in the good times. It has been abused by myself and others. I have learned to honor and respect it. I care for it in ways I share openly but consider completely up to me. It is my business. It requires zero justification however it comes. Bodies are not public property. Even when they have the audacity to be in public. They are private homes. Throwing stones is an indication of the problems in your home, not mine.
