A white colleague of mine asked what they could do to support any and all efforts for #MikeBrown and other Black and Brown bodies that are killed at the hands of either vigilantes or brute police force. I told them: The best thing you could do is to use your white privilege to publicly speak out against crimes such as these. It is the power of white privilege that perpetuates the belief that Black and Brown bodies are inferior and do not deserve the same kind of human treatment by those who are called to serve and protect. My friend, If you are not brave enough to speak publicly on social media, to your inner circles, at your church, your lacrosse leagues, and friends about why so many Black and Brown men die due to excessive police violence, then know that it is your silence that will help carry on these kinds of crimes. My colleague was bewildered. They said, Im not that brave. I said, Yeah, I know. “If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.” -- Zora Neale Hurston. Everyone should have something to say about #MikeBrown. EVERYONE.
