ALL ABOUT THE GREYHOUND DOG THIS MORNING................ (from my memory of what took place over more than ten years ago) When Beth applied for adoption which meant filling in forms for submission....someone from the adoption agency came to her home with a greyhound to see if the breed would fit to the environment/conditions/her cats. The adoption didnt happen overnight. She did not get to select the color......was required to have a crate........the dog had already been neutered......had all the shots.........was given a little booklet of instructions.....was told if the adoption did not work out for her she could not just up and give her away/she would have to be returned and consult the Greyhound Rescue.......if the dog escaped she must notify the police department first then the Greyhound Rescue. The Rescue has about two meetings/picnics each year in Richmond which youre not required to attend. It is just a time/social event for the Greyhound dogs/owners. In Rowans/Beths case......Beth was notified when her sight/unseen dog would arrive at a rest area in Ashland, VA about five oclock in the morning. The truck arrived loaded with the dogs who had not been a profit to the racetrack. Rowan was only about 1 1/2 yrs. old. She wore her red racing muzzle with the name written across the face, Causin Trouble (her race name). Beth already had the required cage in place in a corner of what was to become Rowans large room. Upon opening the back door....one word was spoken by Beth, Cage. Rowan went straight to the padded/cushioned cage. Soon/several months later, the door was easily removed so she wouldnt feel like a caged dog ever again. This dog never barks unless you ignored the plea of those eyes to be let outdoors for her potty trips. You must have a fenced in area or take her outside on a leash. We have inadvertently left the gate open several times she has used our mistake and escaped to run the neighborhood. One of those times Beth found her a distance from Federal Hill to Diamond Hill in downtown LB. Once she escapes no amount of calling will bring her back to your side. Once Beth scoured the entire neighborhood while calling the dogs name from the car. She had to return home without her Rowan. Hours later, the dog returned on her own.....Beth heard her dog tags jingling at the back door. Her sleep area is now within a little alcove within the room and padded with several large washable pads. Her required cage was removed years ago. Since she lives in a fenced in yard she can go out by herself to potty. She returns to the backdoor and just stands until you let her inside. No barking.....no wild jumping.....loves the daughters cats and they ignore her. I cannot say enough good things about this beloved dog. The only bad thing I can convey..........that one day ...... she will no longer be with us at all! -Joyce Mays Scott- 9 January 2015 P.S. Looked up Rowans stats. She won one race and has one brother and one sister. By comparison, her brother won 138 races. The brother was placed with a family outside of Virginia.
