#ALSIceBucketChallenge #PancreaticCancer First of all, I want - TopicsExpress

#ALSIceBucketChallenge #PancreaticCancer First of all, I want to thank @Hong Heo for letting me participate in such a great and meaningful campaign #ALSIceBucketChallenge. I was a bit hesitant at the first place for various reasons but decided to accept the challenge as I thought having more people aware of little-known incurable diseases such as ALS itself has a lot of meanings. Agree or disagree, I believe people in general are reluctant to invest in or donate to the unknown or unfamiliar field simply because they don’t know much about it. Once people get to know more and more about certain issues and start to understand the importance and the seriousness of those, they are more likely to become favorable and supportive to such issues. As such, even if there are many talks over this widespread SNS event, I do want more and more people to become part of this campaign so many more people get to know what is out there and what can we do about it. What is ALS? In short, ALS is a disease that causes deaths of one’s motor neuron. It literally disables your muscles to operate properly which makes patient unable to speak, swallow and breathe ordinarily – this is what we can indirectly experience through this Ice Bucket Challenge (pouring ice water over your head will cause a temporary muscle contraction with a little pain). It’s a creepy disease that kills patients gradually. Please refer to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyotrophic_lateral_sclerosis for more information. There’s no known cure for ALS, and therefore, much more researches and experiments need to be conducted, which needs our support. Moreover, patients suffering from ALS need our sincere attention and supports. I don’t want this campaign to be a one-off social event. There are tons of people around us suffering from various diseases with no known cure. If you have anyone around you going through such painful process, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers so they can stay strong and positive. Give them your full support so they can ultimately beat whatever the disease they are fighting against. Maybe a little personal but I would like to take this opportunity to ask people reading this article to pray for my cousin Andrew Young Young and his family. He has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, an extreme rarity for 24-year-old as what he mentioned, and about to start chemotherapy. Pancreatic cancer is known as the worst cancer due to 1) No initial symptoms, 2) Unknown causes, 3) Difficult operation, etc. It’s not a rare disease and has a long history but complete cure still is an exceptional case. Many researches are being conducted to improve the efficiency of surgery/therapy and to increase the probability of early discovery but we are still far from where we desire to be. Instead of donating U$100 to ALS, I donated it to #PancreaticCancerActionNetwork who supports research activities, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure as I thought it makes more senses to me. Whoever wants to join me, please visit pancan.org/donate-now/. I would definitely donate to other communities/organization including ALS in short order and I encourage all of you to participate in any forms of donation. I nominate Sungjee Yoooo, the person who I think has the warmest heart in whole world, Dawan Aaron Koooo, one of my favorite 동생 in HK who I think will make this challenge widespread in HK, and SungJun Parkrk, my big brother in NY who always inspires me to aim higher. Please accept the challenge or donate U$100 to ALS, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or any other organization you think is working on the meaningful project (or do both) within the end of this week. I hope all of you pray for my cousin Andrew as well. Lastly, I want to thank Emily Nhokeyong Lim, Hyuntae Yim, Jayoung Lee, Danbi Kim, Hyekyung Park, Say Saeyoung Yoon and Steph for coming out tonight to help taking this video.
