ANOTHER DAY IS A GOOD DAY TO DIE: And so we reach the end of the Brosnan era. Soon 007 will regenerate into Daniel Craig. If I recall correctly, everyone knew this was gonna be Pierces last go-round in the tux. And as I learned from the commentary, this was also an anniversary flick. So they really kinda pulled out a bunch of stops. It was so weird seeing Bond get caught by regular military chaps, not a supervillain, and NOT ESCAPE. They let him go. Holy shit that never happens! Now that I think of it, wasnt there a rumor for a while that they were actually gonna kill him off? Long time Bond fans mustve lost their shit when they saw Moneypenny dead. Or for that matter, at the end when she and Jimbo kissed. Id remembered it wasnt real this time, and that first time, I didnt have the decades long UST context. On a side note, I see Moneypenny moved on to be a Who-verse alien mastermind. Mostly this movie seemed to be a bunch of small really cool moments combined with some awesome action scenes (Bond in a sword-fight!!) to create an over-all decent action movie. But it was the little touches that made it work for me. Naturally I didnt notice this stuff the first time around: the shoe-blade from From Russia With Love, the jet-pack from Thunderball, and even the Croc-Boat from Octopussy. Theres probably more shit in that room that I didnt spot. Bond posing as an ornithologist. Hee! In case you didnt already know this, the character is named after an ornithologist. In fact, the author of that book that Bond picks up off the desk. The Bond theme being played on...Im gonna say Mariachi-style guitar, though Im probably getting that wrong. Jinxs entrance is right out of Dr. No, complete with the knife at her hip. I also liked how the opening credits video incorporated the torture montage. I think thats the only time they werent all abstract motion paintings about the over-all storyline. I do have to say though, that for some reason the flirting between James and the women this time around annoyed me. And I cant quite put my finger on why. I dont think the lines were worse in this movie, but all the innuendos and quips and stuff just made me roll my eyes. Odd. And did the film-makers know that the tech minion looked just like Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber?
