Devon-born comedian, Josh Widdicombe was born to play on a Sunday night in Poole. Well, maybe not necessarily in Poole. But why a Sunday? Well, when I think of Sunday evenings, I picture sitting in front of the box and consuming some particularly easy-to-watch television. Widdicombe, who openly admitted to his audience early on that he is not a “big issues” comedian, seem to fit the expectations of a lazy Sunday night perfectly. His observational comedy, featuring an eclectic mix of iPhones, The Snowman and the relatable student dish of Super Noodles held the audience throughout. Amusing exchanges with the front-row and a random heckler worked in his favour, showing that maybe there is something more to him than well-scripted gags about people who filter their water and give home-made jam for presents. Apart from very briefly mentioning filming the Christmas special for “Would I Lie to You?” (Christmas 2014 I must point out), fans were given little insight into the rest of Widdicombe’s career, which truly blossomed from his co-starring role in Channel 4 show The Last Leg. Although, it does seem that the start of his year is already booked up with his “Incidentally…” tour dates, with Poole being the 5th of 34 shows in 2014. The crowd left the Lighthouse in Poole as if they were on a sugar high yesterday, after a night filled to the brim with laughs. Although lacklustre in the categories of excitement and pushing the boundaries, if you are looking for an easy laugh and enjoying mocking the oddities of middle-class life, then Josh Widdicombe is your man.
