ASH WEDNESDAY (Psalm 136.1-9) Nine verses of a Psalm that recites God’s qualities and achievements accompanied by the Gospel refrain, ‘His steadfast love endures forever’. Genesis 1.1-19: The first four days of creation are marked, several of them, including Day and Night, prior to the creation of the sunset and sunrise that marks our days. The sun and the moon that now ‘rule’ the day and night, were not originally there despite the rotation of the earth bringing phases of light and darkness to the surface of the earth. All of this is explained in a way so simple that Adam and Eve could understand it, yet so crypticly that we may never fathom the mystery until we see God face to face. Mark 1.1-13: The commencement of Jesus’ ministry is accompanied by tangible signs of divine support, the water the dove and the audible voice at His baptism and the angelic support that was with Him in the wilderness. Such tangible interaction with our bodies distinguish the sacraments and make them particularly special divine gifts.
