AT BLÜCHERPLATZ IN THE 1930s Heres Blücherplatz and the almost exact spot where Amerika Gedenkbibliothek (American Memorial Library) stand today as it was before the war. None of the buildings to be seen in this photo exists today and neither does the passage to the main entrace of the 18th-century cemetery complex known as Friedhöfe vor dem Halleschen Thore that used to run behind the house in the middle of the picture. The branch of the Dresdner Bank is obviously gone, too. Both the library and the car park next to it - the one along Blücherstrasse - were build on top of the old Bohemian community cemetary as well as some of the oldest graves ever dug at the cemeteries granted by the King outside the Berlin customs and excise wall. So was the extension of Blücherstrasse itself - the old Blücherstrasse ran in front of todays library and ended at Blücherplatz and Belle-Alliance-Brücke (Hallesche Brücke now). The second image, most likely from the 1920s, shows the old Bohemian cemetery and the old Jandorfs Department Store, Poko Domäne today. On the other side of the canal the old Magistratsklavier ( City Councils Piano) still flanks the left side of the entrance to the once most wonderful plaza, to Belle-Alliance-Platz.
