ATTENTION CAT OWNERS WHO ATTENDED THE BURLINGTON RIB FEST: "During the Labor Day weekend, the owner of three cats acquired a 70 gram package of Whiskas® All Natural Temptations® Free Range Chicken Flavour from a male individual handing out ‘samples’ while walking along the waterfront adjacent to the Burlington Ribfest. The treats were consumed on Sunday, September 8 starting at 1:30 p.m. All three cats exhibited neurological signs that afternoon and evening. One cat died at 10:30 p.m. that evening. All three cats were presented to a Burlington veterinary clinic at 11:00 p.m. At that time, the two live cats were cyanotic and comatose. They were subsequently euthanized. The manufacturer of Whiskas® Temptations®, Mars Canada Inc, had no commercial association with the Burlington Ribfest. In addition, the 70 gram package given to the pet owner is not used in any sampling programs. The three cats and a single kibble of the treat were submitted to the University of Guelph’s Animal Health Laboratory on Thursday and Friday, September 13 and 14, respectively. The preliminary pathology report on the three cats is consistent with acetaminophen toxicity. Histology and toxicology reports are pending. The analysis of the treats indicated that acetaminophen was present on the surface of the kibble. This communication is to inform local veterinarians that pet food tainted with acetaminophen may be intentionally distributed to unsuspecting pet owners. As such, the veterinary community should be both aware of the situation and sensitized to the presentation of cats or dogs exhibiting clinical signs consistent with acetaminophen toxicity." - Ontario Veterinary Medical Association ovma.org/extra/notice_acetaminophen_poisoning.html
