AVOID REJECTION – WE CAN USE THE HANDS We are on the edge of a service explosion in North America. Needs have been identified in the each community where a LIONS Club meets. Plans are being made to allocate the necessary resources to meet those needs. The only commodity which is in short supply, the one thing that may prevent us from reaching our goal of serving 100,000,000 needs by December 31, 2017 is the lack of hands to serve. October is Membership Growth Month. Each Club in Michigan is encouraged to add 2 new members. Whether your club is hosting a Membership Growth Event, or not, new members are always welcome. Another pair of hands translates into more service provided, more people to promote club activities and more LIONS to extend invitations to join our effort to eliminate all community needs. How do we ask someone to join our club? After each of us have made a written list of prospects, it is time to begin the process of issuing invitations. Some clubs send invitations to attend an informational meeting. Although this method has proven successful, most clubs do not employ this process. More often than not, members will be encouraged to invite prospective members to join throughout the year. What should you do? LISTEN Membership invitations are most successfully extended to those we know or have taken the time to learn about. When we know a person’s interest, hobbies and motivation for wanting to engage in community service, we can better communicate how the LIONS club aligns with their interest. Hence, we need to inquire and listen. CREATE A VISION After listening for a commonality, begin to share the service your club provides in the areas of interest identified by the prospective member. If you club is not engaged in the area of service identified, continue to ask questions about how the need can be met; what resources are needed; and who is best equipped to organize a response. The conversation should be engaging, with the LION listening 90% of the time. OFFER A PARTNERSHIP Your passion for ________________ aligns perfectly with the vision of the XYZ LIONS Club. I am confident that you would enjoy working with us to address the community need, which you have identified. I would like to invite you to be my guest at our next meeting. Are you available to attend the XYZ LIONS Club meeting on _____________ at ________? Tomorrow, we will look at How to Plan a Membership Growth Event. Jerome Thompson – Alabama Lions are Hands-On
