About 10:30 last Friday night (the first day of this current cold snap) my grand daughter, Alyssa, walked in and said, Poppy, I need to borrow your riding gear. I said, What for? She said, Cole (her husband) bought a motorcycle tonight and hes on the side of the road crying. He cant feel his hands and he thinks his face fell off! Well, after I was able to get up from rolling around the floor laughing, I gathered up what I thought he could use (hes a pretty good sized fella) and gave it to her. When he got it home, I asked him why he didnt wait til the next day when he was better clothed to be riding. (He was not wearing a helmet or face shield, leathers, boots, or gloves. He only had a light jacket, tennis shoes, and jeans with the holes that are fashionable today. And it was 25 degrees!) He said, Well the guy was drunk, and I figured if I waited til he sobered up, he would change his mind! After looking at the bike, I wasnt sure whether it or Cole was in worse shape. It is an 88 Honda Shadow VT 1100 that he paid $400 dollars for. The oil pan is busted, it has a dent in the gas tank, the seat has almost no Naugahyde left on it, and it was pretty rusted in lots of places, with a few wires hanging down, and the side covers were missing. But he was proud of it! Today I asked him how he liked being a biker. He said he did not intend to keep it, that he only got it because it was cheap and he was going to trade it for a truck. So I said, Well, lets at least go for one ride while you got it just so we can say we rode together. So we bundled up the wives and ourselves (my wife and I had to split our gear between the four of us) and went on about 120 mile road trip, from Murfreesboro to Glenwood then over to Arkadelphia and back through Delight. Nice little ride in about 40 degree sunny weather. Beautiful scenery! When we got back, Cole said, Well, I got to get us some leathers now! I mentioned that he would not need them if he planned to get rid of the bike. But he was hooked all over again. He hadnt ridden in 10 or so years. My grand daughter has been riding with me since she moved in with us about 4 years ago, so she has been hooked for awhile. And she is happy that she and her new husband now have their own bike, instead of having to borrow mine. Life is good. Both my daughters love bikes and they have bikes that they ride, and now my grand daughter has hers. I cant wait to go on a few family road trips! It just seems so right! :)
