About a week ago, I had the rather infrequent opportunity of seeing a juvenile male Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) in flight. I am always pleased to see this species since it has declined severely over the past 40 years due to habitat loss and changes to its food supply. The bird was photographed in the new Piedmont Birding Trail site, the Wood Duck Heritage Preserve and Siddique Nature Park in Opelika. This is a great site to view a variety of bird species year around.
