About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?--which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Matthew 27:46 Depression is common to many people. Some go through it several times in a year. Others simply go through it a few times in their lifetime. Regardless, depression is a state that’s familiar to us whether it’s in the form of a momentary feeling of deep sadness or it’s a lengthy bout with clinical depression. If you’re a Christian, they say you’re not supposed to feel this way. Is this true? What does the Lord say when you’re depressed? If you read the verses before Matthew 27:46, you can tell why Jesus would feel that the Father had forsaken Him. There were those who walked by and insulted Him, the religious leaders who mocked Him, and the robbers who were crucified with Him did the same. Those same leaders even said, “He saved others, but he cant save himself! Hes the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, I am the Son of God” (Matthew 27:42-42). As I was reading this, I felt insulted myself. If I were in the Lord’s shoes, I might have given up on these guys and showed off my omnipotence to them just as they suggested. Instead, His silence was a display of love and patience that I have never seen before and probably never will in my lifetime. And so after this and the darkness that followed, Jesus verbalized His depression with words that David himself uttered in Psalm 22. Jesus felt for the first time ever, what it was like to be separated from the Father. The loneliness must have been such that He had to say it out loud for all to hear. In the midst of your depression or loneliness, I believe the Lord would say to you, “I know how you feel. I’ve been there before.” Jesus can relate to you and it means that it’s okay to vent your frustrations and feelings of abandonment to the Lord. He can take it. David was more vocal about them to the Lord way before us and He was still considered by God as a man after His own heart. Go ahead and be honest to the Lord about your emotions. He knows them anyway. It’s about time you started communicating them to Him. The chorus from the song “Trust His Heart” by Babbie Mason reminds me that the Lord can be trusted and that He has a great plan for us. It goes like this: God is too wise to be mistaken God is too good to be unkind So when you dont understand When dont see his plan When you cant trace his hand Trust His Heart So go ahead and be honest, open, and vulnerable before the Lord. Just remember that at the end of the day, trust the heart of God.
