Academically speaking, this week was positive. I had the pleasure to help strengthen a statement of purpose for a student seeking acceptance to a PhD program and an autobiographical piece for another students application to medical school. Both of their stories are extremely impressive and inspiring due to their diligence, academic success, and surpassing of great adversity. Thanks to a friends referral, I continued to work with a young boy who has a wonderful attitude about learning and a natural curiosity that a tidal wave could not drowned. A bachelor student and I worked on her human development assignments, and a master degree student and I enhanced her SWOT analysis regarding a local hospital. A former student/tutee who teaches communications (speech) at CSUEB invited me to give a talk to his class, who were lively, receptive, and appreciative, qualities I deeply respect. Today, I have the privilege to participate on a Skype panel with respect to strategies for ESL students and second language acquisition. Towards self criticism, I still feel bad about loosing a couple of young students a few weeks back. The mother and I did not see eye-to-eye on expectations and a standard of learning behavior. I admit that I did not explain my position well enough to her, and also that I did not readily agree with a request on her part that was indeed reasonable. The worst part is I know I am in a position to have helped her son and nephew. So, I must admit my mistake and not make another like it in the future. Lastly, it is my firm belief that the world cannot move forward without sound knowledge and great intelligence on the part of millions and millions; moreover, until the oppressed and exploited are sharper, wiser, and more knowledgable than the oppressors, hope will be fleeting! Here is to hoping that the worlds peoples will cultivate an undying and ever-growing desire to study and cultivate profound wisdom that no enemy can take away!
