According to a Straits Times article, the ministry is now tapping on an overseas firm in India to verify the education certificates and employment history of Indian nationals working in Singapore. Since Feb 2013, employers are also required to show proof of the authenticity of paper qualifications from China when applying for work passes. MOM said that although it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that documents in work pass applications are genuine, it will use “independent verification channels” to conduct its own random audits. In 2012, 43 foreigners were prosecuted in court for lying about their academic qualifications, while 28 foreigners were convicted of similar offences between January and June last year.
