According to theoretical work by Julian Barbour of Oxford University and his colleagues, a preferred direction of time emerges naturally in systems of gravitationally interacting masses, even without special initial conditions. As Steven Carlip of the University of California, Davis, explains, although the findings of Barbour and his colleagues apply only to gravitational systems and not to, say, electromagnetic systems, they have nevertheless provide an intriguing new viewpoint.
