Adoption community members have struggled when referring adoptive - TopicsExpress

Adoption community members have struggled when referring adoptive parents, children and teens, or birth parents to therapists we felt confident knew adoption and the complex issues that come with being a part of the triad. In the last year or two there has been National attention given to this issue and the lack of training for people in grad schools and in their continuing education. We are trying to use this momentum to bring about some awareness to therapists that they need adoption training and also to eventually build in some requirements within California for adoption training. Assembly Member Dickinson is carrying a bill for CAAA and it has been moving well through Sacramento and is now in the appropriations committee. (For more info on AB 1790 missionfocused.org/legislation/ab-1790/ ) The bill is written to focus on children adopted out of the foster care system, but please know this will have a positive impact on our domestic infant and international adoptive families as well. The more awareness this brings the more therapists will seek out training, and the more the schools offer it, and the more the state requires it, etc, the better off we will all be. This is a time to come together as a community and see the big picture. We now need the voices of adoptive families. I am hoping you will help us by sending a letter of support no later than Monday May 19. There is a user friendly template on the Mission Focused Solutions Website. Im happy to gather them from you all and send them in if that is easier. You can fax them to us at 415-934-0700, or email a scanned version to me at [email protected] or follow the instructions and fax it yourself to the appropriations committee. Thank you in advance, we really appreciate your support.
