Adrenochrome (C9H9NO3) Adrenochrome is an oxidation product of adrenaline (ephinephrine, norepinephrine). The effects and classification of this drug is said to be controversial because it is debated whether is has any psychoactive or hallucinogenic effects, although some test subjects compared the Adrenochrome experience to mild psilocybin and LSD experiences. Psychoactive effects of Adrenochrome may include euphoria, confusion, a change in train of thought, lack of judgment, poor insight and inability to concentrate. Several small-scale studies (involving 15 or fewer test subjects) were done in the 50s and 60s, reporting that Adrenochrome triggered psychotic reactions like thought disorder, derealization, and euphoria. It has never been scientifically accepted, however, that Adrenochrome has psychedelic properties.Researchers Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond claimed that Adrenochrome is a neurotoxic, psychotomimetic substance and may play a role in schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. In what they called the Adrenochrome Hypothesis, they speculated that megadoses of vitamin C and niacin could cure schizophrenia by reducing brain Adrenochrome. Adrenochrome is uncontrolled in the United States. Thus, it is generally legal to buy, possess, and distribute (sell, trade or give). In Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange, Drencrom, a cocktail made with Adrenochrome, is one of the drug-laced milk drinks available in the Korova Milk Bar and in author Hunter S. Thompson mentions Adrenochrome in his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In the book it is derived from a living donors adrenal gland (“Its no good if you get it out of a corpse.). As such, it is purported to be very exotic, and very intense: the first wave felt like a combination of mescaline and methedrine. Thompson reported a significant perceived rise in body temperature that led to paralysis. The Adrenochrome scene also appears in the novels film adaptation. In the DVD commentary, director Terry Gilliam admits that his and Thompsons portrayal is a fictional exaggeration. reverbnation/adrenochrome
