Adventure with a runaway tire. Bonnie Forney and I were driving in the country today when a pickup passed us. The pickup had no more than passed and was pulling back in the lane when we heard a funny noise, and I noticed some black shapes fly out of the back of the truck, among the items was a large black disc shaped item. I yelled for Bonnie, driving, to Look out! Its a tire! The runaway wheel and tire was in the air and then hit the road rolling! We were doing 55, so that runaway wheel and tire must have been doing the same speed. We followed it about a quarter mile down the road where it veered right and ran into a field and kept going about a hundred feet before coming to a rest. The pickup that lost the tire had stopped up the road about a half mile. The driver was out and standing behind his pickup watching the tire. We just waved as we passed the pickup! End of story. Actually semi-common in the Midwest.
