After ART volunteer, Monica Aileys husband Jamie Ailey memorial service, his ashes were placed in the fire truck and driven back to the fire station where he volunteered. Its a tradition within the fire department when one of their fellow firefighters has fallen, they go on their final ride. Kristina Bowman and Sylvia Elzafon were there to document the ride and noticed two dogs huddled underneath a tree in front of the station. It was a small female chihuahua mix and a little boy beagle/shep mix trembling in fear. Sylvia and Kristina were able to scoop the two up and place them in their car and drove them to the Humane Society of North Texas. We asked Lisette Phelps and Tammy Roberts to keep an eye on them at the shelter and to keep us posted about the two pups so we could try to find foster placement and get these two scared kids into a home. I asked Animal Rescue of Texas volunteers, Sheri Olson and Bob Olson if they would be interested in fostering the little Chi mix and they were willing to take on this sweet girl. I spoke with Stacy Smith from Flower Mound Humane Society and asked if the little beagle mix would qualify to be a Love on Wheels dog. I went up to the shelter, Thursday and evaluated both kids and they are both incredibly sweet but very shy and uncertain. The little beagle boy is eligible for the Love on Wheels program so we are seeking a short term foster (usually 3-5 weeks before they can go on transport) Sheri and Bob are on their way to pick up both pups and Kristina will hold the little boy overnight until we can find a foster for this kid. He is a puppy, around 9 months old. Kristina can only hold him for a day or two so we are in desperate need to find a safe place for this kid to land until he is healthy, neutered and ready for his journey to upstate NY. If anyone is interested in a short term foster, please let me know. Animal Rescue of Texas is calling the little girl Mona and the little boy Jay in honor of Monica and Jamie. Thank you Sheri and Bob for fostering Mona and giving these kids their freedom ride. Mona is heart worm positive and will eligible for adoption through ART once she is healthy and has had a little time to adjust.
