After a difficult start to his career at Old Trafford, David Moyes knew something serious had to be done with his current squad. This week he has made his first move in the clubs revitalisation, by securing the club-record transfer of Juan Mata from rivals Chelsea. This signing will give renewed optimism to United fans around the world, as will the news that the club plan to bring in at least four more players, whether this month or in the summer, of the same calibre. This news has also been welcomed by Wayne Rooney, as he has finally opened talks with the club over a new contract, which would see him become the highest paid player in United’s history. This immanent foray into the transfer market will mean that a number of bit part players and senior members of the squad will need to be offloaded to complete the overhaul. Ryan Giggs is likely to retire, while Patrice Evra has indicated that he will not be signing a new contract. Senior players like Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick still have a big role to play at the club, but could see their first team involvement reduced as they have shown signs of ageing and been very susceptible to injury over the past two seasons. But the big issue for United fans is, what will happen to Robin van Persie? Robin was brought to the club, by Sir Alex Ferguson, with one objective in mind, winning the Premier League trophy back from Man City. Which he did, almost single handedly, in what was a magnificent first season at Old Trafford. This season has been very different as the Dutchman has found himself injured for the majority of this current term. There have also been several reports suggesting he is unhappy with Davd Moyes’ management style, which both parties have dismissed as mere rumours. With the title now out of reach, it is imperative that United secure a top four finish this season. Moyes will be hoping that his star striker can return to full fitness and recapture his goal scoring form of last season. The combination of Van Persie, Rooney and Mata, along with contributions from the exciting Adnan Januzaj, the improving Danny Welbeck and the powerful Antonio Valencia, should be more than enough to secure Champions League football for next season. Next season, however, Van Persie will be 31. Rooney will probably play in the number nine role for England at the World Cup and a good tournament could persuade David Moyes to use him in that position at club level. With more attacking signings expected in the summer, next seasons United squad will be a blend of world class players at their peak, young prospects and home grown players. With this being said, Van Persie may feel that it would be best for him to move on. The likes of Barcelona and Juventus have been rumoured to be sniffing around the Dutchman and while he is still at the peak of his powers, he may want a new challenge and one final big money move before he hangs up his boots. Without him, United would not have won the title last season. If they are to finish in the top four this season they will need him to be fit for the final few months of this season. But come the start of next season, I wouldnt be surprised to see him plying his trade elsewhere.
