After turning their backs on the Mayor again yesterday, during the funeral of fallen Officer Ramos, killed last weekend, the NYPD is compounding a terrible tragedy by insulting citizens of the city they are sworn to protect. Its important to honor the memory of the two officers killed a week ago. Its important to remember that police put their lives at risk and deserve -and receive - special powers as compensation. But blaming those officers deaths on peaceful protests and the Mayor is just plain wrong. The protests are not about all police, but if the NYPD keeps this up, they might change peoples minds. NYPD doesnt seem to realize theyve been granted special powers because their position in our lives is respected so much. The protests call out police for abusing the privilege of those powers. Not just for the unnecessary death of Eric Garner, but also for the deaths of many other unarmed black men, decades of Stop & Frisk and other forms street harassment, the wrongful imprisonment of the Central Park 5, as well as violent response to the peaceful Occupy protests and college student protests over the years. Through years of growth and militarization the NYPD seems to have forgotten that they are a public agency and must answer to its citizens. They need to remember and soon.
