Ah, the saga of Julie Boonstra, the Michigan woman suffering from leukemia who was featured in attack ads against a Democratic congressman who supports Obamacare. What was Julies problem? She claimed that under Obamacare she would have to switch insurance plans, that the new plan would not allow her to continue to see her current doctor, that under the new plan her treatment would be so much more expensive as to make it unaffordable, and that without access to affordable treatment she would die. BUT . . . It turns out that under the new plan, she can keep her current doctor, and her total out-of-pocket costs for treatment will DECREASE by at least $1,200 a year. What was her reaction when informed of this by a local news outlet? Did she exclaim, Oh, thank God! Thats wonderful! What a relief! Umm, no. Her reaction was actually to say that cant be true. I personally dont believe that. What are we to make of someone who has so much invested in the notion that Barack Obama is trying to kill her that she refuses to accept irrefutable evidence to the contrary? And what are we to make of those powerful forces in our political culture who seek to benefit from the susceptibility of Ms. Boonstra, and others like her, to such unwarranted victimization?
