Alfred Hitchcock was quite satisfied with Salvador Dalis work on the dream sequence (which was originally much longer). David O. Selznick disliked Hitchcocks original intentions for the sequence and felt that the footage looked like a Monogram film. (Monogram produced very low budget B movies.) He also felt that the sequence asked too much of audiences. The sequence was chopped up and re-worked by William Cameron Menzies to Selznicks specifications. Both Hitchcock and Dali were disappointed. The final result is an amalgam of Dali, Hitchcock, and Menzies. One wonders what might have been...
