Ali Hassan the answer to your extraordinary question E=mc² is followed if we want energy, but lets not take our example (a consumer) in this case. Take an example of a producer (Plants). They make their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and electrolytes. Since they take sunlight to make food, laws of physics are applied here. Plants use chlorophyll (a green colored pigment) to make food (a process called photosynthesis), what actually happens is that there is an electron in the chlorophyll that becomes excited when sunlight strikes and jumps from cell to cell losing its energy to become stabilized once again. The energy it loses is utilized in making bonds b/w carbohydrate molecules making a long chain of carbohydrate molecules (polysaccharides) example being starch found in potato. Then as I mentioned yesterday, law of conservation of energy is applied. When we take potato (or any other carbohydrate) in our diet, the bonds are broken and the energy that was trapped is released, giving us the energy. An intriguing question.
