All-Area strongest since 85 // Squad loaded with talent Chicago Sun-Times ~ November 10, 1989 | Taylor Bell . Talent scout Tom Lemming says the Chicago Sun-Times 1989 All-Area football team is the strongest since 1985. Lemming says the best way to measure the quality of a class is by the depth of its talent - how many blue chippers fail to earn All-Area recognition? - and this years team is noteworthy by the number of big-time prospects who were selected and those who werent. The 44 who did, their parents and coaches will be honored at the annual All-Area dinner Nov. 27 at the Como Inn, 546 N. Milwaukee. Michigan State coach George Perles will be guest speaker. You know the team is strong when every member is a legitimate choice and there are at least 20 blue chippers who didnt make it who will get Division I scholarships, Lemming said. Nineteen members of the squad, selected by a panel of 19 coaches representing every conference in the city and suburbs, will be showcased tomorrow in quarterfinal games of the state playoff. And two others will lead Julians bid in the Public League semifinals at Soldier Field. The team is headed by running back Alex Rodriguez of Lane Tech, the first Public Leaguer since 1983 to be named Player of the Year and only the third Public Leaguer to win the prize in the last 28 years. Not bad for a kid who was a backup fullback last year . . . a kid whose defensive coach thought was best suited to be an inside linebacker . . . a kid who wasnt discovered until the second half of the season opener. Now Lane coach Sam Bronswick says Rodriguez is in a class with two of the most explosive ball-carriers produced in the Chicago area in the last 20 years, St. Ritas Billy Marek and Lane Techs Mike Morgan. Rodriguez and lineman Bob Karlov (90, pictured) will lead Lanes bid against Palatine and quarterback Randy Hecklinski and wide receiver Bob Hanson in tomorrows Class 6-A quarterfinal in Palatine.
