All of the following congenital and hereditary defects have been noted on shipping/vet certificates for puppies obtained by the Family Puppy in 2013 and into this year. And not just for a few-16% of all the puppies. And John Stottele says All our puppies are free of congenital and hereditary disorders. I asked a vet to give an idea of what these defects could cost a buyer. List and costs: Umbilical hernia – repair could cost up to $500 Inguinal hernia – repair could cost up to $1200, depending on severity Luxating patella(s) – surgical repair is $2500 to $3000 per leg, if ongoing arthritis becomes a problem there will be ongoing costs Cryptorchid – surgical neuter to get testicle from abdomen could cost up to $500, if testicle is not retrieved there is a 75% chance it will become a malignant tumor Open fontanel – no cost to repair because it can’t be repaired, but dogs with open fontanelle will be more prone to seizures, hydrocephalus, and neurologic problems Entropion - $500 - $2000 depending on how many lids need repair Heart murmur - $550 + for echocardiogram, if pup has something genetic like a PDA, surgical repair runs $5,000+ Stenotic nares – surgical repair $1,000+ Overbite – more prone to dental problems, will require more dental care, $250-$500 per year Underbite – same as overbite Ear mites – Under $50 to treat but may have chronic ear problems Intestinal parasites – Can take multiple treatments to clear and stool samples may need to be checked many times, cost could run into the $100’s Behavioral issues – can run in the $1000’s Demodex (poor immune system!) – can run into the $1000’s
