All righty, editors and writers and anyone else who might know ... what is the proper word or phrase for what I refer to as a comma phrase? (I know this is wrong, but Ive never had to refer to it properly before now.) In other words, its a phrase offset by a comma or commas that interrupt the flow or narrative. For example: In particular, I was not, for example, taught in childhood to believe in miracles. Or In 1950, during a debate on war powers, the thought occurred, while in the shower, that the ... These sentences would (will) be rewritten to eliminate most of the commas.
