Almosta Farm Report: Ive been playing with my camera! :) The Yellow Jackets are enjoying the fennel in my garden! I started to say they are enjoying my fennel, but with about 10 of them and a few other wasp hanging out on it I have decided that it is at least temporarily theirs! :) Seems we always have young rabbits living in our barn. They grow up fairly unafraid of us because of familiarity. For some reason it is less frustrating to me to see a cute baby rabbit in the barn than it is to see it in the garden! I just plant a little extra for them. Lots of bird activity here. My attempts to take photos of the hummingbirds have been a bit of a learning curve because our feeders are hung so that the bright sky usually makes them into a silhouette. There I stood, in position so that I could take photos at 2 of our 4 feeders that were the furthest from me, because our normally brave birds dont come eat when Im pointing my camera at them real close...and I wait....then one comes and buzzes in my ear and starts eating at the feeder which is about a foot behind my right ear! I just laughed and called it a day! My streak of good luck at raising baby chicks has hit a rough spot. Of the 12 eggs I put under my hen 10 hatched. Then I lost two babies over the weekend of the horse show. A few days ago a feral cat killed one chick, I did get a definite close up confirmation of who the predator was. Today another round of the hens screaming predator, and now there are only 6 left. Although I didnt see what took the chick Im assuming it was the cat. We seldom see the cat(s), although the tracks say its here frequently. Im leery of setting a live animal trap, for fear of catching a skunk. Any suggestions other than a Great Pyrenees? Well probably end up with another outside dog, but the perfect one hasnt shown up yet. :) The hens are producing well, in the last 2 days they laid 23 eggs. Not bad for 8 laying hens! The one hen caring for the chicks is excused from laying duties of course. On a lighter note, IT HAS BEGAN AGAIN! :) The dehydrator is currently working on its first load from this years garden! Yellow squash! Yep, Ive came up with a diabetic friendly lasagna recipe using squash to replace the noodles. Works good! The two blurry photos of Spider on the lawn mower in the rain, were taken May 30. Im not sure if he spent the afternoon trying to get the lawn mowed between rain showers, or if he spent the afternoon mowing lawn to cause another shower to come! It did get him at least 3 times! :) They arent great photos, but my little point and shoot Sony cybershot did all right considering he was way down at the Little Barn and I was nice and dry on our balcony taking his photo! Hope the predicted rains come, and help fill everyones ponds, and water the plants...but not cause flooding!
