Although known primarily for his best selling novels, author William Peter Blatty is also a very accomplished screen writer and film director as well. Exorcist 3 was an adaptation of his horror novel Legion. Originally the film was going to be helmed by William Friedkin, the director of The Exorcist, but he pulled out citing creative differences. At one point even John Carpenter was touted to direct. Eventually Blatty took over the reins himself. The films main protagonist is Lieutenant Kinderman, the cynical and world weary policeman from the first movie, here played by the Oscar winning actor George C Scott. The film also has another important character from the first movie but I dont want to mention who it is as that would be spoiling things! Set 15 years after the events of the Exorcist, the plot revolves around a series of grisly murders committed in and around Georgetown. Kindermans character believes that the brutal killings have all the copycat hallmarks of The Gemini Killer a long dead serial killer. But what starts off as homicide case for Kinderman quickly descends into something much more inexplicable and frightening instead. Exorcist 3 works well as a detective thriller but also very well as a psychological horror movie. The film contains very little gore and instead employs creating fear and dread through tension as well as the use of jump scares. Theres a fantastic example of such in the film and it really is well executed, no pun intended! Adding to the films scariness, most of the action is set in either deserted churches or in a hospital. Lights flicker on and off, doors creak and street shots contain menacing fog. William Peter Blatty throws every horror movie convention at the audience but it all works surprisingly well. In short this is a masterful supernatural thriller and definitely worth tracking down.
