Always a very touchy subject for pet owners with an elderly pet; When is it the time for you to take matters into your own hands and do something, or do you let the elderly pet go on as best as he can, till its his own time. This is a struggle we have been dealing with for a while now. We have an almost 19 year old Shih tzu mix, whom I have had since he was about 6-8 weeks old who is pretty much blind, looks to have arthritis in his back legs, and is slowly losing some of his bodily functions. Is it fair to him to let him go on like this? Or are we being selfish because we dont want to let him go? He still has a bit of playfulness in him and when you pick him up, he snuggles his little head into your shoulder and neck like hes hugging you. Which is just one of the best feelings ever. Just the thought of him leaving us makes my heart break but to have to make a decision on what to do, is something I do not want to face. We just want to do right by him. He has given so much love and joy his whole life. He has been the best 4 legged child Ive had. We lost one of our girls about 4 years ago to cancer and chronic kidney disease and knew when her time was for her and had her put to sleep. It is one of the hardest things ever. Has anyone else out there been in similar situation? Anyone that knows me knows I love my animals like my children so this will not be an easy decision. Thanks for any comments and bless you. :)
