Amaechi vows to resist Police take-over in Rivers state Rivers State Governor, Chinuike Rotimi Amaechi has called on the people of the state to resist every attempt by the Rivers State Police command to turn Rivers into a military state. Amaechi gave the indication during the Independence day celebration held in Port Harcourt. In his words, “We must stand together as Rivers people to confront the attempt by the Nigerian Police to turn Rivers State into a police state. This state is led by a civilian government. We will not allow what is happening to continue because we have come to the reality of the fact that election is what brought this government. Anybody that wants to govern the state must come through election and not by military means”. He recalled how the police dispersed 13,000 newly recruited teachers by the state government at the Liberation Stadium over unfounded excuse that they were hired to protest against the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. The governor said all steps should be taken to thwart attempts by those plotting to disrupt democratic flow in the state.
