Amrullah SalehCrossing the pass of negotiations with the USA Throughout the history, the Afghans have not been this sensitive, inquisitive and involved in negotiations with an outside power. The Afghans have always viewed the negotiations as a responsibility of the elite and people in power. Perhaps in this case, in the case of negotiations with the United States of America, for the first time in history, it will be people of Afghanistan bearing the responsibility for results and consequences directly. Nations set a high ideal when entering into negotiations with rival powers, hostile powers, friendly powers or allies but come out of it with a deal specifying give and take for the parties. History of Afghanistan is no witness to any good, equal or treaties enjoying popular support. Treaties such Gandomak, Durand, Rawelpendi and tens of other smaller ones are seen as dark spots of our history. But this time around, with the belief that we should not be fearful of negotiations but not negotiate out of fear either, both the Afghan government and the Afghan people shone and stood upright. The Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the United States won’t make us a little America in the region . But if we maintain and strengthen our unity, we can reap the benefits of our broad relations with the West and thus come out of the viciousness of history and pass through the impasse of poverty and deprivation.
