An absolutely gorgeous mid-summer afternoon. sunny, cool and breezy. I had seats on the Phil side, front row of the upper deck. Taped it with a pair of AKG 451 mics with the short shotgun into the trusty Sony TCD D-10 DAT machine. I also had a second deck, and was using the Sennheiser Binaural Headset mics to see what they sounded like. They had been sound checking Casey Jones the whole tour, and when they did that day, the entire parking lot scene let out a roar, but they only dicked with it a bit. There was a hint during space of what was to come, as Mickey went off stage for a second at the quiet beginning of Space and came out with this..thing strapped to him. They hey flipped a switch, and HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK!!!!!!! Its a diesel train air horn, and it shatters the quiet into little shards. When the blast quit, it was one of those spine tingling moments for me, echoing around RFK and the surrounding areas, the aftermath of BIG NOISES, that tell you just exactly how big a noise it was. The crowd was so stunned they didnt even cheer until all the spatial information died out. Then Frikkin Steve Miller came out and played the rest of the set, and comported himself well. I didnt even mind the One More Saturday Night to close the set, because the Baba ORiely/Tomorrow Never Knows encore was my first time, and it was wonderful. took My buddy/shop manager Karen from Magnum and I 3 hours to get out of the parking lot and mud. Great time.
