An appeal to vote yes in the upcoming referendum. As a citizen - TopicsExpress

An appeal to vote yes in the upcoming referendum. As a citizen concerned about the well-being and future of our community, I appeal to you today to vote yes for the race and yes for the zoning change this coming Sunday. We are once more confronted with an issue which divides us, an issue which in itself is fairly trivial, one skidoo race per winter next to but not in “the reserve”. When such a race was held a couple of years ago, no significant negative effects were noted, but some businesses in the village had increased sales. Many people feel that the present issue is but a symptom of a larger cause, namely the very significant portion of our territory “the reserve” occupies and controls and the associated internal zoning and usage restrictions imposed on the public. Many of our citizens feel that the strict conservation orientation and hiking only restriction has so far left them holding the bag. The absence of any concrete socioeconomic preoccupation on the part of “the reserve’s” owners and management is causing frustration and resentment. In the upcoming vote only residents of zones adjacent to the one in which the race is to take place have the right to vote. Even though this is the law, it seems undemocratic. The citizens and business owners in the village who have a stake in the issue are excluded from voting, whereas people living many miles to the north east can do so. A yes vote signifies more than just a yes for the race! So, vote YES if you have the right to vote and convince others to do so; if you do not, express your concerns at the next municipal council meeting. Hans Walser Nov. 23 -2014
