An attempted escape by convicted criminal and serial escapee, Annanias Mathe, was foiled by a warder at the Ebongweni C-Max prison. According to a report in the Sunday Tribune, Mathe’s attempt to escape the prison was uncovered after the warder heard noises coming from his cell on Tuesday. Mathe, who is serving a 54-year sentence for rape, attempted murder, fraud and armed robbery, had been using a hammer and chisel to break through his cell wall for over four months. He has previously escaped from Johannesburg Central prison in January 2005 and Pretoria C-Max prison in 2006. By the time his latest attempt was uncovered, he had managed to open up a 30cm hole in the wall. He had been concealing his efforts with toothpaste and clothes, which were used as makeshift plaster. According to the report, no prisoner has ever escaped the Ebongweni C-Max prison.
