An early painting by Mondrian Piet Mondrian (Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan; Dutch; 1872 – 1944) Evening; The Red Tree (Avond; De Rode Boom) Dutch; 1908-1910 Oil on canvas H. 70.0, W. 99.0 cm Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, Netherlands Pieter Cornelis Piet Mondriaan, after 1906 Mondrian (Dutch; 1872 – 1944) was a Dutch painter. He was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed neoplasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors. One of Mondrian’s earliest paintings, this was the first in which he implemented his color palette of red, blue and yellow, the three primary colors. Also as one of his earlier paintings, it was still a clearly representational form of a tree ... In the abstraction of the color of the tree and the simple design, Mondrian’s aesthetic style is already present in this simple landscape. This post-impressionistic piece was only a stepping stone in the artist’s development into his ideal form of neo-plasticism.
