An essential element in the removal of fear of any enemy and the illusion of permanence of this life and being resolute in the seriousness of every action is embodied in the words of the Ronin Yamamoto Tsuneltomo in his book Hagakure, speaking on the issue of death and the way of the warrior : The way of the warrior is found in death. Meditation on the inevitability of death should be performed daily. Even when ones body is at peace one should mediate upon being ripped apart arrows, spears, swords, bullets and by being carried by surging waves, being thrown in the midst of a great fire, being stuck by lightning, being shaken to death by a great earthquake, or falling from a thousand foot cliff, or dying of disease.... And everyday without fail one should consider himself as dead. This is the substance of the way of the warrior.
