And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:8-10 We’re told clearly in this passage that our material focus is solely to be on basic necessities: food and clothing (and perhaps adequate shelter in severe climates) but our society sure demands far more from us doesn’t it? We have to not only pursue more than this but we also are encouraged to pursue luxury, excess and exceeding all those around us materially. We don’t resist this like we are admonished too, instead we compromising “Christians” either tacitly accept it or even embrace this materialistic push and neglect the spiritual focus we are called to pursue avidly and with devotion. We’d rather go after money or the latest faddish item than care about human souls and human need. How repellant we have become in God’s eyes. He tells us what we need but we arrogantly choose what we want because let’s face it…WE WANT TO BE GODS and have it our way. We practice not only gross idolatry but high blasphemy. How could we ever think God would ever be pleased with us? Our behavior is shameful and sickening. Contentment in God’s eyes is basic necessity, it’s NOT luxury and it’s NOT fad and it’s NOT greed. We should always want to give more than we ever consume. We choose to be discontented because we choose to be selfish…PERIOD!!! I’m so sick of this. Vince Capman May 2007
