And it just gets worse in Venezuela, with a total of 34 killed in the opposition protests that have been going on for weeks. The Maduro government is cracking down on the press, arresting journalists and members of parliament and opposition leaders. Meanwhile, the government has had to introduce rationing of subsidized foodstuffs, which are sold far below the market price and so disappear from shelves immediately. Theyre running out of oil money as prices continue to fall. And Maduro is blaming it all on an American conspiracy, of course. There are a couple of possible outcomes here, and the most likely is a self-coup by Maduro, with the self-defense forces, the pro-Maduro armed mobs, taking control of the streets and the government becoming an out-and-out Cuban-style dictatorship. There will be bloodshed. Maduro will not just give up. Well have to see what the military does.
