And the good news keeps on coming with another 2 Rivers submission being successful. Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council were advised this week that they were successful in securing funding to run a program called gagil minan – marrabaa minan (bad weed – good weed) through the NSW Environmental Trusts Protecting our Places grants. The project will see experienced Aboriginal weaver Ronella “Dolly” Jerome and the Department of Primary Industries facilitate 2 x 4 day workshops with Tamworth women and youth to identify native species and their suitability as traditional weaving materials. The workshops will also have a strong focus on WONS and how to identify WONS, and safe removal and disposal. The project will assist in restoring and protecting the projects sites environmental and cultural significance through educating the participants on the proper techniques for collecting natives to minimise impacts on the environment and ensure plants will continue to grow /reproduce and how to utlise them in traditional weaving materials through cross generational workshop deliveries. Dolly Jerome is a well known and respected cultural educator who is based out of Tenterfield.
