And there it is in a nutshell: ... it was already clear that the most conservative members of the House were not going to go along quietly with a plan that does not accomplish their goal from the outset of this two-week-old crisis: dismantling the president’s health care law. We’ve got a name for it in the House: it’s called the Senate surrender caucus,” said Representative Tim Huelskamp, Republican of Kansas. “Anybody who would vote for that in the House as Republican would virtually guarantee a primary challenger. From the NYtimes -- but these arent opinions, these are statements of fact. Thats what were facing as a country and explains exactly why the government is shut down, all the B.S. aside. The Republicans in the House have been put on notice by their party spokespersons that if they vote with the Democrats to stop the shutdown, raise the debt ceiling, and begin real negotiations, even if these are only temporary expedients, that they will not be in their seats during their next election term. On the other hand, if they vote against the Senate plan, they will be returned to their seats (they mostly come from districts that have been gerrymandered around existing Republican majorities) even though their intransigence is likely to have caused a major meltdown in the stock market and in the global economy. Talk about cutting off a nose to spite a face, or whatever homily youd care to apply to this childish and self-serving stubbornness.
