“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night.” Luke 2:8 As a freshman at Columbus College, I taught a Sunday School class of second grade girls at Eastern Heights Baptist Church. Several of those girls lived in the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home near our church. Our director, Mrs. Lucy Bridges, challenged the children to memorize the 23rd Psalm. She had a large poster on the bulletin board … and when a child recited the Psalms to his/her teacher … a gold star was placed by the name. One Sunday morning one of my sweet girls from the Shepherd Home told me that she was ready to recite the scripture. She said, “The Lord is my Shepherd and that’s all I need”. She fluttered her hands in the air and said, “There are lots more words, but those are the most important ones”. With tears in my eyes, I took her hand and we placed a star on the poster by her name. She knew the 23rd Psalm … of that I am sure. I have not been eighteen in many, many years … but I have never forgotten the lesson she taught me that Sunday. May the Great Shepherd bless us all with the faith of a child.
