Berkshire Medical Center will host a reception for the artist from 3pm to 5pm on Friday, October 3rd in the Main Lobby of BMC. Read 4 time cancer survivor, Andrea Feldman’s, artist statement below. “It was the fourth time I had cancer. After my surgery in 2011, still in shock and horror at the loss of body parts, I struggled to find some peace. I was in the midst of being pounded by cancer treatment and my white blood cell count had dropped during chemo. I decided that I would help the number of healthy cells to increase by painting them as I imagined them. I painted nearly every day. When I felt too sick to function, I took a pill to make me sleep. When I could stay awake, I was able to paint when I could do little else. I was miserable, but painting helped distract me from my physical and emotional discomfort. I’d never painted abstract forms before. Over the years, I’d rendered flowers, fruit, and figures. I made wrapping paper and greeting cards for friends and family. It almost became a sacred ritual to step into the calming, safety of painting colors and shapes. As abstract forms emerged, I got more involved with the process and less concerned with the results. Painting served as a way to shift my attention from painful self-absorption to a more neutral place. I selected paintings, pictures and stories, and created an exhibit I call, “Artful Warrior-How painting helped me survive cancer.” This show is about how I transformed my physical and emotional condition while dealing with a life-threatening illness. It became soothing to paint circles as abstract images of the cells in my veins. I continue to paint most days. I have had several exhibits, and given talks on the topic of using art to heal. I will continue to share my experiences in the hope that others will cultivate self-expression for self-healing.”
