The virus causes a weakened immune system in the infected horse and severe EIA is tested for by the Coggins test. Every state has its own specific requirements for Coggins testing. All horses that travel are required to have a negative Coggins test. As you can image, due to the high likelihood of spread within the horse population from a positive horse to negative ones, it is important that all horses congregating are EIA negative. Make sure you check with individual state regulations before transmitting your horse. Most states require a negative EIA test (Coggins) within the last 12 months; HOWEVER, there are some states that require a negative test within the last 6 months.
