Anyone planning to get pregnant, or may already be pregnant, then Shark Girl which aired on the ABC tonight is a much watch. It explores shark (Flake), where the meat is sourced in Australia, and the toxins they carry within their flesh. Fourteen randomly selected pieces of shark meat were tested for mercury levels by the The National Measurement Institute. Eighty percent of these samples contained more mercury than that recommended for human consumption in Australia. Two of the samples tested contained levels above the maximum legal safe levels in Australia. By American standards our shark meat comes in at a whopping 341% of mercury which is three times greater than safe levels. Safeway (Woolworths) was one of those sources. Their shark meat (Flake) was tested and found to contain mercury in quantities 60 % higher than the legal limit that is considered safe for human consumption............. Mercury rates second to radioactive material in terms of human toxicity. It is proven to cause brain and development disorders in human embryos, and recurrent miscarriage. It builds up in the brain! Some countries are advising pregnant women not to eat any shark while Australian authorities continue to approve its consumption. Next time you order flake and chips, or reach into the freezer for some frozen fish, remember this flesh contains a heavy metal which is many times proven to be toxic to humans. It is a definite no-go zone for those in their child bearing years (both males and females as it causes mutations within cells, and remember sperm are cells and contribute to 50% of a human embryo. As Shark Girl (Maddison) questions.....What is the greater risk to human health? Being eaten by sharks, or consuming shark meat??????
